The Charleston metro — Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, West Ashley, James Island and Daniel Island — is one of the premier tennis destinations in the United States, named the USTA’s “Best Tennis Town” in 2010. It is home to the Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women’s-only pro tournament in North America, and to a world-class clay-court scene on Daniel Island. Tennis here runs on two tracks. The public side is the City of Charleston Tennis Division — the Charleston and Maybank tennis centers, the Courting Kids youth program and a deep municipal league calendar — while the club side runs through the LTP academies in Mount Pleasant and on Daniel Island, the private country clubs across the Cooper River, and the resort courts out on the sea islands at Kiawah and Isle of Palms. Adult competition is organised by the Lowcountry Tennis Association, which advances champions through USTA South Carolina to USTA Southern and national play.

SCHSL — girls in the fall, boys in the spring, for public schools statewide. South Carolina splits the two seasons by gender, which means a single set of school courts carries both programs across the year and one coach can run girls in the fall and boys in the spring. Team championships are played at the Cayce Tennis Center outside Columbia, with singles and doubles at the Lexington County Tennis Complex — roughly a two-hour drive from the Lowcountry, so a deep playoff run means travel for Charleston-area programs.
Classifications — 5A Division I, 5A Division II, 4A and 3A, with the smallest schools in a combined 1A/2A bracket. Most of the large Charleston metro programs sit in 5A, where the division split separates the biggest suburban schools from the rest of the class. Bishop England plays 3A. The practical effect for players is that region play across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties feeds directly into a state bracket sized to school enrollment rather than to geography.
SCISA — independent schools run their own championships. Private and independent programs including Ashley Hall and Porter-Gaud compete under the South Carolina Independent School Association rather than the SCHSL, on a separate calendar with its own boys and girls state tournaments. That gives the metro two parallel high school seasons, and it is why several of the strongest local programs never meet the public-school champions.
