Tennis Clubs on Hilton Head Island & in Bluffton
Hilton Head Island is one of the great tennis destinations in the United States, and it is not close. Six major tennis centers sit on a single barrier island: Palmetto Dunes, rated the top tennis resort in the Carolinas by Tennis Magazine, on 17 clay courts; the Sea Pines Racquet Club on 18 clay courts, led by 1971 US Open and 1972 Wimbledon champion Stan Smith; Van Der Meer across two sites; Port Royal; and South Beach. The island is also the headquarters of the Professional Tennis Registry, and it is where the Family Circle Cup was born in 1973 before moving to Charleston.
Across the May River, Bluffton has become one of the fastest-growing tennis communities in the Lowcountry. Its master-planned communities — Sun City Hilton Head, Palmetto Bluff, Hampton Hall, Berkeley Hall, Belfair and Colleton River — carry their own courts and field USTA Southern league teams year-round, with Sun City the most active senior league hub in Beaufort County. The two sides sit ten to twenty minutes apart, so most players here use both.

BCTA League Play
The Beaufort County Tennis Association runs USTA adult league tennis across the whole market for players 18 and over at levels 2.5 to 5.0, with teams advancing to local, state, sectional and national championships.

Presented by the Beaufort County Tennis Association, the Pro League has grown from a handful of pros playing under the lights into one of the island’s signature community tennis events.

Competitive Adult Tennis

For a barrier island of about 40,000 people, Hilton Head punches absurdly above its weight. Two highlights:
The Family Circle Cup was born here in 1973 and stayed on the island until moving to Charleston in 2001 — the same tournament that is now the Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women’s-only pro event in North America.
The island is the headquarters of the Professional Tennis Registry, one of the largest coaching organizations in the world, founded by Dennis Van der Meer. A meaningful share of the world’s certified teaching pros were trained on these courts.

SCHSL — girls in the fall, boys in the spring. South Carolina splits its two high school seasons by gender, so one set of school courts carries both programmes across the year and a single coach can run both. Team championships are played at the Cayce Tennis Center outside Columbia, with singles and doubles at the Lexington County Tennis Complex — a three-hour drive from Hilton Head, the longest haul of any market in the state.
Class 4A Region 6 — and why region alignment matters more here than the class does. For the 2026-28 cycle the SCHSL placed Beaufort, Bluffton, Colleton County, Hilton Head Island, Lucy Beckham and May River in Region 6, with Lucy Beckham dropping from Class 5A to take the spot Bishop England held in the previous cycle. That keeps most of the regular season inside a compact triangle of Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and Beaufort, while Colleton County inland at Walterboro and Lucy Beckham up in Mount Pleasant — the one region member not based in this market — are the long bus rides. Battery Creek is the county’s odd school out, placed in Class 3A Region 5 and playing a largely Charleston-area schedule. Alignments reset every two years, so re-check before each season. Statewide, classification runs 5A Division I, 5A Division II, 4A and 3A, with the smallest schools in a combined 1A/2A bracket.
The academy effect. No other high school region in South Carolina sits this close to two full-time national junior academies. Hilton Head Island High benefits directly from Smith Stearns, Van Der Meer, Palmetto Dunes and Port Royal being minutes from campus, and Hilton Head Prep runs a midday academic programme built around academy training and plays its home matches at South Beach Racquet Club. The result is a region where the top of the singles ladder is often stronger than the school enrollment would suggest.
