South-Central Indiana offers one of the Midwest's most distinctive blends of college, recreational, and clay-court tennis -- a compact region covering Monroe, Bartholomew, Morgan, Lawrence, Jackson, and Brown counties. The region is anchored by Bloomington, home to Indiana University and the 48,000-square-foot IU Tennis Center -- 8 indoor hard courts with U.S. Open-style colors and PlaySight SmartCourt Technology, open to both the IU community and the public. The adjacent IU Varsity Tennis Courts provide 10 outdoor hard courts with 600+ seat capacity, and have hosted four Men's Big Ten Championships.
A few miles north of the IU campus, the Russell Road Racquet Club operates the only red clay courts in the state of Indiana -- 5 outdoor courts built from 20 truckloads of red clay trucked in from local quarries. Owned and run by longtime Bloomington High School North coaches Ken Hydinger and Barb Mills, the club has roughly a 25-year history, 100+ members, and runs USTA league play, round-robins, flex leagues, and junior and adult instruction. Bloomington also offers roughly 22 free public courts at city parks including Winslow Sports Park, Cascades Park, and Bryan Park -- giving casual players easy access without club membership fees.
About 40 miles east of Bloomington, Columbus, Indiana -- home to the regional IU Columbus campus (Crimson Pride NAIA athletics, though not tennis) -- rounds out the region with Tipton Lakes Athletic Club (TLAC), 4 indoor climate-controlled asphalt tennis courts right off I-65, and Harrison Lake Country Club, a private club since 1945 running 4 newly renovated lighted courts with a Women's Tennis League, junior program, and adult instruction. USTA league and tournament play in the region falls under CITA (USTA Central Indiana), the same USTA Midwest district that covers the Indianapolis metro. Whether you are looking for competitive tournaments, organized doubles leagues, junior summer camps, or a private lesson, South-Central Indiana offers year-round tennis for players of every age and skill level.

USTA league and tournament play across South-Central Indiana is coordinated by CITA (USTA Central Indiana), the same USTA Midwest district that covers the Indianapolis metro. Leagues run at NTRP levels from 2.5 through 5.0, including men's, women's, mixed doubles, combo doubles, and age-group divisions (18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over, 65 & Over). Bloomington teams typically play home matches at Russell Road Racquet Club (clay), the IU Tennis Center, and public park courts, with Columbus-area teams operating out of Tipton Lakes Athletic Club and Harrison Lake Country Club. Russell Road Racquet Club specifically runs individual and group lessons, USTA league play, round-robins, flex leagues, and match-finding services year-round.

High school tennis in Indiana is governed by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) under a single-class state tournament format. In Indiana, boys tennis is a fall sport and girls tennis is a spring sport. Bloomington and Columbus produce much of the region's top IHSAA talent, with high school programs closely tied to the local club ecosystem -- Russell Road Racquet Club owners Ken Hydinger and Barb Mills also coach Bloomington North, while Bloomington South's program runs under head coach Matt Corry with an active USTA curriculum partnership.
The region's IHSAA conference landscape is undergoing significant change. As of the 2025-26 school year, Conference Indiana houses Bloomington North, Bloomington South, and Columbus North; Hoosier Hills Conference (HHC) includes Bedford North Lawrence, Columbus East, and Seymour; Western Indiana Conference (WIC) contains Edgewood and Brown County; and Mid-State Conference is home to Martinsville and Mooresville. Starting in 2026-27, Bloomington North will leave Conference Indiana to join Mid-State, and Brown County will leave WIC to rejoin the Mid-Hoosier Conference.
Governing Body: IHSAA Tennis -- boys tennis (fall) and girls tennis (spring), single-class state tournament.
South-Central Indiana's collegiate tennis scene is anchored by Indiana University's Big Ten programs in Bloomington. The Hoosiers compete out of the 48,000-square-foot IU Tennis Center (8 indoor courts) and the adjacent IU Varsity Tennis Courts (10 outdoor courts, 600+ seat spectator capacity). The Big Ten expanded in 2024-25 to include UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington, adding a new layer of competition to the conference tennis schedule. Just north of the region, Franklin College in Franklin, IN offers the nearest NCAA Division III men's and women's tennis programs -- a natural landing spot for many Bloomington and Columbus-area high school players looking to continue competing at the college level. Note also that IU Columbus (the regional IU campus in Columbus) fields NAIA Crimson Pride athletics but does not currently offer varsity tennis.
Indianapolis metro collegiate tennis programs -- Butler, IU Indianapolis, and UIndy -- are covered on the Indianapolis Metro page. Other Indiana collegiate programs outside the S-Central footprint include DePauw (Greencastle), Wabash (Crawfordsville), Rose-Hulman and Indiana State (Terre Haute), and Hanover College (Hanover, south of Columbus near the Ohio River).
