Columbia, SC — the state capital and the tennis hub of the South Carolina Midlands — has built one of the deepest and most layered tennis communities in the Southeast. Beginner development follows the USTA's Red-to-Yellow Ball progression across city programs, private clubs, and nonprofit academies including the DD&J Junior Tennis Foundation, the South Carolina Tennis Academy, and Syreeta's Tennis Academy. At the collegiate level, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks define Columbia's tennis identity. For adult players, the Columbia Tennis Association organizes USTA League play at every level from 2.5 through 5.0 — across 18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over, mixed doubles, and combo doubles formats — with teams regularly advancing to USTA South Carolina state championships and Southern Section competition.
Sumter, SC is approximately 45 miles east of Columbia and is home to one of the most tightly-knit and well-organized tennis communities of its size anywhere in South Carolina. The Sumter Tennis Association (STA) — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — drives the local scene through USTA league play, monthly mixers, weekly open tennis groups, and community tournaments. On the junior tournament circuit, Sumter has earned genuine national recognition: the J200 Philip L. Edwards Junior Clay Court Championships — an ITF-sanctioned event drawing the top 10% of junior players worldwide — has established Sumter as a legitimate stop on the path toward the ATP and WTA circuits.
Aiken, SC is roughly 35 miles west of Columbia and carries a tennis tradition that stretches back to the late 19th century. The Aiken Tennis Club — incorporated in 1898 and built in 1902 — is home to one of only about a dozen court tennis (real tennis) courts in the United States, and the only one in the South. USTA league play, adult clinics, junior development programs, and a community tennis culture shaped by decades of serious racquet sports make Aiken a tennis town that consistently produces competitive players well beyond what its population size might suggest.
Whether you are looking for competitive tournaments, organized doubles leagues, junior tennis camps, or private lessons, the Columbia, Sumter, and Aiken area delivers year-round tennis for players of every age and skill level.

Four certified tennis professionals provide lessons and clinics for all ages starting at age four. The facility hosts the J200 Philip L. Edwards Junior Clay Court Championships (an ITF-sanctioned event for the top 10% of junior players worldwide), the NJCAA Women's National Championships, and the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championships. The Sumter Tennis Association (STA) — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — coordinates the local USTA league scene, hosts monthly mixer events, runs weekly tennis groups, and organizes local tournaments, making Sumter one of the most well-organized tennis communities of its size in South Carolina.
