Tennis on the Nevada Shore of Lake Tahoe
Tahoe has three substantial tennis clubs, and the two that anyone can play at are both in Nevada. The third, Tahoe Donner across the California line, is open only to members and vacation renters. On the north shore, the Incline Village Tennis & Pickleball Center runs nine courts along a year-round creek beside the recreation centre, with a pro shop that charges no sales tax. On the south, Zephyr Cove Tennis Club has six lighted courts, USPTA staff through the summer and a full USTA league programme — run jointly by Douglas County and a nonprofit foundation.
The season is short and spectacular: roughly mid-May to October at about 6,200 feet, with weekly socials and mixers all summer. Juniors get in cheaply — afternoon court fees at Incline are $3 for under-12s, and free with an IVGID pass, with classes from age three and a competitive academy above them. One warning: at this altitude, balls that would land in at sea level sail long.

Before you go — book, and mind the altitude. Reservations are recommended at every Tahoe club; both Nevada clubs take bookings and both are open to the public for a fee. The season is roughly mid-May to October and weather-dependent at either end, so check before travelling in the shoulder months. At about 6,200 feet the ball flies — expect balls that would be good at sea level to land long, and give yourself a set to adjust. Note also that court counts at Incline vary across listings; IVGID’s own figure of nine tennis courts is used here, and pickleball conversion may explain the discrepancy.

The ball genuinely behaves differently up here. Two highlights:
At 6,200 feet, your groundstrokes go out. Tahoe tennis is played in thin air, and balls that would land comfortably in at sea level sail long. Visitors routinely lose a set to it before adjusting — flatter, shorter swings and a little more spin are the usual answer. It is the same physics that makes Denver a bogey venue for touring professionals.
The public tennis is all on the Nevada side. Tahoe’s three main clubs are Incline Village, Zephyr Cove and Tahoe Donner — and the two open to anyone are both in Nevada. Tahoe Donner, in California, is restricted to members and people renting in the Truckee enclave. Yet it is Tahoe Donner that hosts Nevada’s NIAA state finals.
College Tennis & the Pathway Out
No college tennis at the lake — the nearest programme is down the mountain.
There is no college tennis on either Tahoe shore. The nearest programme is the University of Nevada, Reno, whose Wolf Pack play Division I Mountain West tennis at the McArthur Tennis Center — about an hour down the mountain, and covered on our Reno guide. Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village closed its independent operations in 2022 and is now part of the University of Nevada, Reno.
What the lake offers instead is a genuine club pathway. The Junior Tennis Academy at Incline Village, USTA Quick Start camps, classes from age three and USPTA coaching at Zephyr Cove give juniors here more structure than most Nevada communities of this size — even if the season only runs half the year.

One lake, two counties, two school districts. Incline High on the north shore is Washoe County; George Whittell High at Zephyr Cove is Douglas County. They sit on the same shoreline about 30 miles apart, separated by a mountain road, and answer to entirely different administrations.
Whittell is remarkable for its size. About 139 pupils across grades 6 to 12, competing in Northern Nevada Division IV — and named by U.S. News in 2020 as the best non-charter high school in Nevada. It takes its name from George Whittell Jr., who once owned much of the Nevada shoreline and built the Thunderbird Lodge. Its athletic courts sit on Warrior Way, the same street as the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club.
The state finals are played in California. Both 2024 Class 3A title matches were staged at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee — where Truckee and South Tahoe beat Boulder City. Confirm current classifications with the NIAA before the season.
