Northern Arizona is the high country of the state — a four-season tennis region built around the mountain communities of Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, and Kingman. Unlike the desert metros to the south, this is cooler, higher-elevation tennis: Flagstaff sits near 7,000 feet, so summers are pleasant and ideal for outdoor play while winters bring real cold and snow. Tennis here is governed by the USTA Southwest Northern Arizona Region, one of the three Arizona regions of USTA Southwest.
The region's flagship is the NAU Tennis Center in Flagstaff — a modern facility with six indoor and six lighted outdoor courts that keeps tennis going year-round despite the mountain winters. It is home to the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks Division I men's and women's teams and is open to the community by reservation, hosting USTA junior and adult tournaments, the Flagstaff Tennis Open, and the Lumberjack Classic. To the southwest, Prescott offers a lighted seven-court public hard-court facility, while Sedona, the Verde Valley, and Kingman add community park courts, resort courts, and HOA tennis.
Northern Arizona tennis is anchored by the NAU Lumberjacks, whose men's program won the 2026 Big Sky Conference Tournament title and reached the NCAA Championships, and whose women's program has claimed multiple Big Sky regular-season titles. Below the college level, the region offers community and high school tennis across Flagstaff, Prescott, the Verde Valley, and Kingman, with the NAU Tennis Center's indoor courts making it the year-round hub. Whether you are a junior, a league player, or a newcomer escaping the desert heat, Northern Arizona's high-country tennis community is welcoming and active in every season.

Many high-country players compete in tournaments and doubles leagues organized through Tennis Circuits®.

Both boys' and girls' tennis are contested in the spring, and as of 2025 USTA Southwest is the official presenting partner of the AIA Tennis State Championships. Northern Arizona is the high country of the state, and its tennis reflects that. Flagstaff sits near 7,000 feet of elevation, so summers are cool and ideal for outdoor play while winters bring real cold and snow — the opposite of the desert calendar in Phoenix and Tucson. That is why the NAU Tennis Center's indoor courts are so important, keeping tennis going year-round. The region anchors the USTA Southwest Northern Arizona Region and is home to the Big Sky tennis programs of NAU.
Yes. Unlike the desert, Northern Arizona's peak outdoor tennis season is spring through fall, when the high country is cool and comfortable. Flagstaff and the higher elevations can see cold weather and snow in winter, which is why the NAU Tennis Center's indoor courts are essential for year-round play. Lower-elevation Kingman is milder and more desert-like, with a longer outdoor season. Across the region, summer is prime tennis time — the reverse of Phoenix and Tucson.
