Fort Mill and Rock Hill — the two largest communities in York County, South Carolina — form a rapidly growing tennis community situated just south of Charlotte, NC on the SC-NC border. York County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States over the past decade, and its tennis infrastructure has grown alongside it. The area is served by a strong network of public courts, community programs, and an organized USTA league structure through the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association (MCTA) — the USTA Community Tennis Association covering York, Chester, and Lancaster counties.
The flagship public tennis facility in the region is the Rock Hill Tennis Center (897 Maplewood Lane), which features 11 lighted regulation hard courts opened in 2005 as a joint effort between the City of Rock Hill and Rock Hill School District Three. A USTA member organization, the Rock Hill Tennis Center offers sanctioned tournaments, adult and junior leagues, lessons, and clinics year-round. The Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts (701 Oakland Ave) — a 12-court lighted facility completed in 2003 — serve as a second major public court resource in Rock Hill. The Town of Fort Mill offers youth tennis lesson programs at local parks, and additional public courts are available at Fewell Park and Confederate Park in Rock Hill at no charge.
The area's position on the SC–NC border means Fort Mill and Rock Hill players have convenient access to the broader Charlotte metro tennis community as well. Whether you are looking for competitive tournaments, organized doubles leagues, junior summer camps, or a private lesson, the Fort Mill–Rock Hill area offers year-round tennis opportunities for players of every age and skill level.

York County high school tennis is governed by the SCHSL. For the 2024–26 cycle, York County's largest schools form an all-York County Class 5A Region 3: Catawba Ridge, Clover, Fort Mill, Indian Land, Nation Ford, Northwestern, and Rock Hill — a deliberate geographic grouping to reduce travel. York County's Class 4A schools (South Pointe and York) compete in a geographically mixed region alongside Midlands schools including A.C. Flora, Camden, Dreher, Lancaster, and Richland Northeast. Winthrop University (Rock Hill) is an NCAA Division I institution in the Big South Conference. The Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts (701 Oakland Ave) — a 12-court lighted facility with 300-seat capacity, completed in 2003 and dedicated in 2004 in memory of Winthrop's 1993 men's tennis team — remain on campus and serve as a community and youth tennis resource. Note: Winthrop's varsity tennis programs were discontinued in 2020 due to financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. The courts continue to serve the Rock Hill community as a significant public court asset and are currently used by Coach Julie Sawyer for her Fort Mill/Rock Hill Tennis Camps and afterschool programs.
Under longtime coach Cid Carvalho — who served as Tennis Director for the City of Rock Hill from 1983–1997 — the Winthrop men's program won five Big South titles and the women's program won 21 Big South Championship titles with 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carvalho was named Big South Women's Coach of the Year 11 times and received USTA Player Development's "High Performance Coach" designation.
Fort Mill and Rock Hill players pursuing collegiate tennis most commonly advance to programs in the greater Charlotte area — Davidson College, UNC Charlotte, Queens University — or to South Carolina programs including Wofford, Furman, USC Upstate, and the University of South Carolina.
Fort Mill's location directly on the SC-NC border gives its residents immediate access to the Charlotte, NC metro tennis market — one of the largest in the Southeast. Many Fort Mill and Rock Hill players compete in Charlotte Tennis Association leagues, train at Charlotte-area clubs, and access facilities such as the Charlotte Tennis Club, Davidson College, and other regional venues. This dual-market access is a unique advantage for York County tennis players and makes the Fort Mill–Rock Hill area one of the most tennis-rich communities of its population size in South Carolina.
