Tennis in Fort Mill & Rock Hill
Fort Mill and Rock Hill are the two largest communities in York County, sitting on the state line directly south of Charlotte. York County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States over the past decade, and the tennis has grown with it — though it has grown differently from the rest of South Carolina. It runs mostly on public courts — city facilities across Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Tega Cay, with a handful of private and community clubs alongside them — plus community programs and an organised league structure through the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association, the USTA association covering York, Chester and Lancaster counties.
The flagship is the Rock Hill Tennis Center on Maplewood Lane — 11 lighted hard courts opened in 2005 as a joint project between the City of Rock Hill and Rock Hill School District Three, and a USTA member organisation running sanctioned tournaments, leagues, lessons and clinics. The 12-court Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts are the second major resource. The state line matters too: a half-hour drive puts local players into the Charlotte metro league scene, giving York County a second full competitive calendar that no other South Carolina market has.

Before you go: this is a public-court market, which is good news for drop-in play — the city courts across Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Tega Cay are open to the community, and the Fort Mill courts behind the YMCA are reservable. The Rock Hill Tennis Center and Winthrop Memorial courts block time for sanctioned tournaments, leagues and camp sessions, so check the calendar first. Spring Lake Country Club and Shiland Hills are member access, and the York Comprehensive courts are a school facility. Call ahead to confirm hours and lighting.

The all-York-County region is gone. Through the previous cycle, the county’s seven largest schools formed a single Class 5A region — a deliberately compact grouping that kept travel short. For 2026-28 the SCHSL split it. Fort Mill, Northwestern and Rock Hill stayed in 5A and now play in Region 2 alongside Boiling Springs, Dorman and Spartanburg, roughly seventy miles west. Everyone else dropped to Class 4A Region 3, which is now the near-all-county region: Catawba Ridge, Clover, Lake Wylie, Legion Collegiate, Nation Ford, South Pointe and York. The practical effect is that the county’s three biggest programs travel much further than they used to, while the 4A schools travel less.
Indian Land is the outlier. It sits in Lancaster County rather than York, and for this cycle it plays Class 4A Region 4 with the Midlands schools — A.C. Flora, Dreher, Lancaster, Lugoff-Elgin, Richland Northeast and Westwood. That is the longest regular-season travel of any program in this market. It stays on this page because the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association covers Lancaster County, so its club and league tennis is local even when its high school schedule is not.
Where the season ends. SCHSL team championships are played at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center and the individual championships at the Lexington County Tennis Complex, both in the Columbia area — about ninety minutes south. Statewide, classification runs 5A Division I, 5A Division II, 4A and 3A, with the smallest schools in a combined 1A/2A bracket. Region alignments reset every two years, so re-check before each season.
