Northern Michigan occupies a singular place in Midwest leisure life -- a region of extraordinary natural beauty, cherished summer traditions, and communities that attract some of the most active seasonal and year-round residents in the Great Lakes. Tennis is woven into the fabric of Northern Michigan's resort culture in a way that is rare outside of the classic coastal destinations of the Northeast or Southeast. From the Grand Traverse Bay shoreline in Traverse City to the bluffs above Little Traverse Bay in Petoskey and the historic harbor at Charlevoix, private clubs, resort facilities, and well-maintained public courts dot a landscape that draws players from across the Midwest every summer season. Traverse City -- Northern Michigan's largest city and its commercial and cultural hub -- anchors the region's tennis infrastructure with the strongest competitive community and the most consistent junior development activity in the area.
Traverse City Country Club (1725 S Union St) anchors the Grand Traverse area's private-club tennis with outdoor courts and pickleball. The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA on Racquet Club Drive -- with 5 indoor tennis courts -- is Northern Michigan's primary public indoor tennis facility, open year-round to members and families. Bay Tennis & Fitness adds another indoor tennis and fitness option. The Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme has long hosted NMTA tri-level tournaments and summer programming.
To the north and east, Petoskey and the Little Traverse Bay communities -- including Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, and Boyne City -- are home to some of Northern Michigan's most storied summer-season tennis. The Bay View Association -- the historic 1875 Methodist Chautauqua summer community next to Petoskey -- runs its own 8-week summer racquet program at the Bay View Lake Courts and Bay View Woods Courts from mid-June through mid-August, with adult men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, and junior programs for ages 5-14. Petoskey-Bay View Country Club (founded 1915) is the area's primary private country club. Further afield, Charlevoix Country Club, Walloon Lake Country Club, Birchwood Farm Golf & Country Club in Harbor Springs, and Country Club of Boyne extend summer club tennis across the Little Traverse Bay and Lake Charlevoix communities.
The Northern Michigan Tennis Association (NMTA) -- one of 13 USTA Midwest Section districts -- coordinates USTA league play, tournaments, and rankings across the Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, and Upper Peninsula regions. High school tennis across the Traverse City and Petoskey area competes in the Big North Conference, and Traverse City Central's tennis program -- playing at the Larry Nykerk Trojan Tennis Center, a 12-court complex nicknamed "The House Larry Built" -- has one of the most remarkable high school tennis records in the state, including 22 consecutive Big North boys titles and a Central girls' MHSAA Finals streak that has run 43 consecutive years.
Whether you are looking for competitive tournaments, organized doubles leagues, junior summer camps, or a private lesson on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay or Little Traverse Bay, Northern Michigan offers summer-season tennis in one of the most beautiful settings in the Midwest.

Adult competitive tennis across Northern Michigan is coordinated by the Northern Michigan Tennis Association (NMTA) -- one of 13 USTA Midwest Section districts, covering Grand Traverse, Emmet, Charlevoix, Alpena, and the Upper Peninsula. The NMTA organizes USTA League play and tournaments at available NTRP levels, including Tri-Level, mixed doubles, combo doubles, and age-group divisions, with teams advancing through USTA Midwest to state and sectional championships. NMTA contact: [email protected] · (231) 590-4515. Executive Director: Margaret Ruemenapp. The district has long hosted local league competition at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme.
Northern Michigan's adult tennis community has a character unlike any other market in Michigan -- it is shaped as much by seasonal residents and summer returnees as by year-round players, and the intensity of competition during the summer outdoor window reflects a community that packs the equivalent of a full year's league activity into a compressed season. Traverse City Country Club and the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA (5 indoor courts) anchor the Grand Traverse area's year-round league community. In the Petoskey corridor, the Bay View Association racquet sports program -- running mid-June through mid-August on the Bay View Lake Courts and Bay View Woods Courts -- sustains summer doubles play for residents of the historic Bay View summer community. Private clubs including Petoskey-Bay View Country Club, Charlevoix Country Club, Walloon Lake Country Club, Birchwood Farm Golf & Country Club in Harbor Springs, and Country Club of Boyne round out the Little Traverse Bay and Lake Charlevoix competitive club community.

Junior tennis development in Northern Michigan is anchored by the NMTA's North Country Junior Classic and sanctioned district tournaments, supported by year-round indoor programming at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA, and summer clinics at Traverse City Country Club, the Bay View Association, and area resort clubs. Traverse City Central High School -- home to one of the most successful high school tennis programs in Michigan history -- provides a powerful developmental environment, with resources, facilities, and competitive culture that extend well beyond the varsity roster.

High school tennis in Northern Michigan is governed by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). The largest Traverse City and Petoskey area schools compete in the Big North Conference (BNC), which includes Traverse City Central, Traverse City West, Petoskey, Cadillac, Gaylord, and Alpena. Most smaller schools in Charlevoix, Emmet, and Antrim Counties now compete in the Northern Shores Conference (NSC), a new league formed in 2024-25 when six schools left the former Lake Michigan Conference. Glen Lake and a handful of smaller schools compete in the Northwest Conference. MHSAA boys tennis is a fall sport and girls tennis is a spring sport, with individual and team state championships held annually. Division classifications (D1-D4) for tennis are set by MHSAA and may differ from classifications in other sports.
Traverse City Central's tennis program stands out as one of the most successful in Michigan. The Trojans play at the Larry Nykerk Trojan Tennis Center -- a 12-court complex named for the coach whose Central tennis legacy goes back to 1968, nicknamed "The House Larry Built" -- and in 2025 the boys won their 22nd straight Big North Conference championship. Central's girls tennis program has qualified for the MHSAA Finals 43 consecutive years, one of the longest active streaks in any Michigan sport. Longtime Central coach Nykerk described the program as "the Notre Dame of the North" during an independent era before the Big North was founded in 1997.
Governing Body: MHSAA -- Michigan High School Athletic Association
Northern Michigan does not currently have a four-year college or community college offering varsity tennis within the region itself. Northwestern Michigan College (Traverse City) has not fielded intercollegiate athletics since 1976 and currently offers only esports and intramural sports under the Hawk Owls name. Lake Superior State University (Sault Ste. Marie) discontinued sponsorship of both men's and women's tennis programs effective June 30, 2025. Competitive juniors from Traverse City, Petoskey, and the surrounding region who want to play varsity college tennis typically head to four-year programs downstate or out-of-state. The nearest active college tennis programs include Central Michigan (MAC) in Mount Pleasant, and the GLIAC Division II programs at Ferris State (Big Rapids), Grand Valley State (Allendale), and Wayne State (Detroit).
