Coastal North Carolina offers a distinctly unhurried tennis experience shaped by resort facilities, oceanfront private communities, and a year-round playing season driven by one of the mildest climates on the East Coast. Wilmington is the region's tennis hub -- a fast-growing city of 130,000 anchored by active private clubs, a strong NCAA Division I program at UNC Wilmington, and a Cape Fear Tennis Association (CFTA) that coordinates USTA league play across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. Wilmington Athletic Club anchors private club tennis in the city with multiple courts and year-round adult and junior programming. Landfall Country Club in the Landfall gated community near Wrightsville Beach operates one of the Cape Fear region's most active private tennis programs. Cape Fear Country Club, one of Wilmington's oldest private clubs, maintains a well-established tennis program with USTA-active membership. Public tennis is accessible through New Hanover County at Hugh MacRae Park and City of Wilmington recreation facilities throughout the county.
Beyond Wilmington, the Cape Fear coast extends south through Brunswick County -- home to resort and retirement communities including Brunswick Forest, Compass Pointe, and Ocean Isle Beach, many of which include tennis facilities as core amenities. North along the coast, the Outer Banks of Dare County offer a more seasonal but deeply passionate tennis community centered on Nags Head Tennis and Swim Club and recreational courts across Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, and the resort communities of Corolla. UNC Wilmington Seahawks (NCAA Division I, CAA) field varsity tennis programs whose coaching staff supports junior development throughout the region.
Whether you are looking for competitive tournaments, organized doubles leagues, junior summer camps, or a private lesson with an ocean breeze, Coastal NC provides year-round tennis for players of every age and skill level.

Adult competitive tennis across Coastal NC is coordinated by the Cape Fear Tennis Association (CFTA), the USTA Community Tennis Association serving New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. The CFTA organizes USTA League play at all NTRP levels from 2.5 through 5.0, including Flex leagues, mixed doubles, combo doubles, and 18 & Over, 40 & Over, and 55 & Over divisions, with teams advancing through USTA Carolina to state and sectional championships. Landfall Country Club and Cape Fear Country Club both field active private club league teams. In Brunswick County, planned communities including Brunswick Forest and Compass Pointe support growing resident tennis populations with courts, club programming, and CFTA-affiliated league teams. The mild coastal climate -- with average January lows in the mid-30s and comparatively short winter interruptions -- extends the effective outdoor league season at both ends of the year, giving Wilmington-area players more playable months than most of the Southeast.
Junior tennis development across Coastal NC is a growing priority, with the Cape Fear region expanding its academy and clinic programming as Wilmington's population and youth sports market continues to grow rapidly. The CFTA runs active USTA Junior Team Tennis leagues for boys and girls ages 6--18 across New Hanover and Brunswick counties.
High school tennis in Coastal NC is governed by the NCHSAA. New Hanover County schools compete in the Mideastern 4A Conference. Brunswick County schools compete in the Southeastern 3A/4A Conference. Dare County and Outer Banks schools compete in the Northeastern Coastal 1A/2A Conference. Private schools in the region compete under the NCISAA.
Governing Bodies: NCHSAA -- public school tennis | NCISAA -- independent school tennis
Coastal NC's collegiate tennis is anchored by UNC Wilmington, which fields NCAA Division I programs in the Colonial Athletic Association and serves as the region's primary source of high-level collegiate competition and junior development influence.
