Abilene ISD's three high schools compete in UIL District 4-5A, providing competitive pathways for junior players aspiring to collegiate tennis. The district championship is held at the Rose Park Tennis Center, with regional championships at the Texas Tech McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
High school players in Abilene benefit directly from the city's collegiate tennis presence — university courts, coaching staff, and structured programs at ACU, HSU, and McMurry provide resources and mentorship rarely available in comparably-sized cities.
Abilene's three-university tennis ecosystem is one of its most distinctive features as a tennis city. Each program offers competitive NCAA tennis with scholarship and walk-on opportunities for talented junior players from across Texas and beyond.
Both the men's and women's programs compete at the highest level of collegiate tennis in the
Western Athletic Conference, playing home matches at the John T.L. Jones Tennis Complex. The men's program, led by head coach Juan Nunez, won the WAC Tournament championship in 2022 and 2025, earning an NCAA Tournament berth in 2025 against defending national champion TCU. Competing in the American Southwest Conference at the Streich Tennis Center, HSU is one of the most consistently competitive Division III tennis programs in Texas. The men's team won the 2025 ASC regular season title with a perfect 4-0 conference record and hosted the ASC Championship Tournament in Abilene. As of 2016, Hardin-Simmons had won 75 ASC conference titles across all sports — more than any other school in the conference.
McMurry fields both men's and women's tennis programs under head coach Chris Breaux. The War Hawks compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) through the 2025–26 season, then rejoin the American Southwest Conference in 2026–27. McMurry hosts the annual Big Country Classic fall tennis tournament in Abilene, attracting programs from across West Texas and beyond.
