Chicago & North Shore Tennis Areas

The Chicago & North Shore area — spanning the City of Chicago, Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, and Lake Forest — is one of the deepest and most storied tennis ecosystems in the United States. The region is served by the USTA Midwest Section through the Chicago District and Northern Illinois (NITA) districts, and hosted the 2018 Laver Cup at the United Center — a marquee event featuring Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Team World captain John McEnroe, where Team Europe won 13–8 before 93,000+ fans. The Chicago Fall Tennis Classic (WTA 500) was held at XS Tennis Village on the South Side in 2021, won by Garbiñe Muguruza over Ons Jabeur, and from 1984 to 2019 the Nielsen Pro Tennis Championship — an ATP Challenger event at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka — hosted Pete Sampras, James Blake, John Isner, Kevin Anderson, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe.

Thanks to Chicago winters, the area is also one of the largest indoor tennis markets in the country. Players have year-round access to premier indoor clubs like Midtown Athletic Club Chicago (16 indoor courts, USTA-recognized youth pioneer), Lakeshore Sport & Fitness in Lincoln Park, the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka (8 indoor + 12 outdoor courts), North Shore Racquet Club (family-owned since 1961), and historic private clubs like the Racquet Club of Chicago. Extensive organized league play runs year-round through the Chicagoland Indoor Tennis Association (CITA) and USTA Midwest leagues.
