Midland, Texas is home to one of the most ambitious tennis communities in the Lone Star State — anchored by the Bush Tennis Center, the premier public tennis facility in West Texas. Named in honor of former President George W. Bush — who grew up in Midland — the center opened in 2012 at 5700 Briarwood Avenue and currently features 19 full-size lighted courts including a stadium court, 8 pickleball courts, and 2 padel courts. Upon completion of its full build-out, it is planned to become the second largest tennis center in the world with over 60 courts including covered and indoor facilities.
Midland's tennis ecosystem extends well beyond Bush Tennis Center. The Midland College Tennis Center at 3600 N. Garfield St. offers 14 newly resurfaced courts and 12 pickleball courts, free and open to the community daily and serving as a host site for USTA-sanctioned junior tournaments. Midland Country Club maintains 12 courts for members, and private schools including Trinity School of Midland also field active tennis programs. Midland ISD's high schools — Midland High School and Legacy High School (set to return to the Lee High School name for the 2026-27 school year) — compete in UIL 6A tennis, and USTA League play, junior development, and collegiate tennis at the NCAA Division II level all call Midland home.

Midland's most distinctive tennis legacy is its connection to the Bush family. Former President George W. Bush grew up in Midland and dedicated the Bush Tennis Center in 2011, joking at the ceremony that it really ought to bear his father's name — George H.W. Bush, who was nationally known as one of the most tennis-devoted presidents in American history, a player who hit the courts at the White House and competed in celebrity matches well into his later years. The city has since grown into one of the most tennis-forward communities in West Texas, with Bush Tennis Center aiming to become the second largest tennis center in the world. UTPB Falcons NCAA Division II tennis regularly uses Bush Tennis Center as a home venue, and Midland ISD fields competitive UIL 6A high school programs at both Midland High and Legacy High School (returning to the Lee High School name for 2026-27).

Midland's tennis identity is shaped by both its presidential legacy and its community-first ambition. Bush Tennis Center was founded with an explicit mission to make tennis accessible to everyone regardless of physical, financial, or geographical barriers — a philosophy reflected in its free-to-use public court facilities and scholarship-supported junior programs. The city's Permian Basin geography and oil industry prosperity have helped fuel significant investment in tennis infrastructure, making Midland one of the best-resourced tennis communities of any city its size in Texas. Midland players can find tournaments, doubles leagues, and match play through Tennis Circuits®.
Midland's adult tennis scene is supported by USTA League play, club tournaments at Bush Tennis Center and Midland Country Club, and UTR-rated events that draw players from across the Permian Basin region. Bush Tennis Center hosts adult clinics including the popular Thursday Night Clinic and Drill & Play Morning Clinics, as well as adult leagues and round robin events. The Midland-Odessa metro area creates a competitive pool of adult players that compete both locally and at regional USTA events.

Junior tennis development in Midland is anchored by two organizations. Bush Tennis Center offers comprehensive junior programming for all ages and levels, including team tennis, private and group lessons, and junior clinics. The Midland College Tennis Association runs the MTX Tennis Academy for junior players and hosts an annual USTA-sanctioned junior tournament schedule, making the MC courts one of the most active junior tennis hubs in West Texas. Together, these programs create a full development pipeline from beginner through competitive junior levels. Junior Team Tennis (JTT) through Tennis Circuits® provides additional team-based competitive opportunities.

Midland ISD fields competitive UIL 6A tennis programs at both of its high schools. Both programs compete in District 2-6A and use local facilities including Bush Tennis Center for matches and practice. Private and charter schools also maintain tennis programs, adding additional competitive depth to the Midland tennis landscape.
The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB), based in Odessa, fields both men's and women's tennis programs in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference — and uses Bush Tennis Center in Midland as their home venue, directly tying collegiate tennis competition to Midland's flagship facility. The UTPB men's program had a landmark 2023-24 season, winning their first-ever Lone Star Conference regular season title in program history. The team advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional again in 2024-25, with senior Jonathan Vega ranked No. 35 nationally in ITA NCAA DII singles and the doubles pair of Vega and Jonas Krahofer ranked No. 29 nationally — the program's highest individual rankings to date. The UTPB women's program has also made multiple NCAA South Central Regional appearances in recent years, competing against programs including Lubbock Christian, UT Tyler, St. Mary's, and Midwestern State.
Midland College (NJCAA) does not currently field an intercollegiate tennis team, but its campus tennis facility — the MC Tennis Center at 3600 N. Garfield St. — is one of the most active community tennis hubs in the Permian Basin. With 14 newly resurfaced courts and 12 pickleball courts, the facility is free and open to the public daily. The Midland College Tennis Association manages the facility, runs the MTX Tennis Academy junior program, and hosts USTA-sanctioned tournaments throughout the year. A pro shop renovation and additional court lighting project is underway with completion expected in 2026.
