The Rockford & Northern Illinois region — spanning Rockford, Loves Park, Belvidere, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, McHenry, Woodstock, and the far northwest suburbs — is an indoor-forward tennis region where year-round play is built around a small network of dedicated indoor clubs. The region is served by the USTA Northern Illinois (NITA) District within the USTA Midwest Section, which covers the northern third of Illinois and supports year-round league play, tournaments, and junior development across indoor tennis clubs throughout the district.
Indoor tennis in the Rockford metro is anchored by the Boylan Tennis Center (6 indoor courts with locker rooms, on the Boylan Catholic High School campus at 4000 St. Francis Drive). The longtime Forest City Tennis Center closed in December 2019 and was demolished in 2020, making Boylan the Rockford metro's sole indoor center — former Forest City GM Danny Beeman moved with it as Boylan's current director. In McHenry County, The Racket Club in Algonquin — operated by the Crystal Lake Park District — bills itself as McHenry County's original and largest indoor/outdoor tennis facility. Outdoor public tennis is headlined by the Guilford Tennis Center — a 14-court lighted outdoor facility run by the Rockford Park District. At the collegiate level, Northern Illinois University's women's tennis program in DeKalb won its first MAC West Division title and reached the MAC Championship match in 2024–25.

Rockford and Northern Illinois play under the USTA Northern Illinois (NITA) District within the USTA Midwest Section. The district covers the northern third of Illinois and supports year-round play. NITA runs primary league seasons (Early Start, Fall, and Winter Leagues), with a shorter Summer League. Teams compete at NTRP levels from 2.5 through 4.5+ in men's, women's, mixed, combo, and tri-level formats. District champions advance to USTA Midwest Section and, for winners, USTA National Championships. A distinctive feature of the region is the Northern Illinois Traveling Tennis League (NITTL) — a women-only, doubles-only Thursday/Friday inter-club travel league running out of The Racket Club and other northern Illinois indoor facilities. For registration and results, visit USTA NITA and nittl.com.

Junior tennis development in Rockford and Northern Illinois is driven by a blend of park district programs and year-round indoor club programs. The Rockford Park District operates seasonal youth tennis lessons, summer camps, and league play at the Guilford Tennis Center (14 outdoor courts). The Crystal Lake Park District runs its junior tennis programming through The Racket Club, covering pee-wee through advanced high-school-age competitive training.
At the competitive level, the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford is the region's primary year-round indoor training hub, offering group and individual lessons alongside programming tied to the Boylan Catholic High School tennis program. Director Danny Beeman, the former Forest City Tennis Center GM, leads the program; the facility has about 60 active members. The Herrick-Thomas Memorial Foundation at The Racket Club provides annual tennis scholarships for junior players (January–March application window). USTA Junior Team Tennis (JTT) and NITA junior tournaments round out the competitive pathway.

High school tennis in Northern Illinois is governed by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), with boys tennis in the spring and girls tennis in the fall. State tournament competition is split between Class 1A (smaller schools) and Class 2A (larger schools). The Rockford area is served by the NIC-10 (Northern Illinois Conference), home to Boylan Catholic — whose on-campus Boylan Tennis Center gives it the strongest indoor tennis infrastructure in the conference — alongside Rockford-area schools like Auburn, Guilford, East, and Jefferson. The McHenry County and far northwest suburbs region plays in the Fox Valley Conference (FVC), which includes Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Prairie Ridge, Cary-Grove, Jacobs, and Huntley, among others.

Northern Illinois is home to NCAA Division I, Division III, and NJCAA tennis programs serving the region's high school graduates. The flagship program is the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Huskies women's tennis team in DeKalb, which in 2024–25 posted a school-record 22–9 campaign, won the MAC West Division for the first time in program history, reached the MAC Championship match as the No. 2 seed, and earned the first NCAA-era postseason bid in program history with an appearance in the UTR Sports NIT Championship. Head coach Eric Burns is in his 7th season at the helm. Rockford University competes at the Division III level in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), fielding both men's and women's teams. McHenry County College (MCC) runs NJCAA men's & women's tennis programs in Region 4, with all home matches played at The Racket Club in Algonquin.
Program status is periodically updated; consult each school's athletics site for current roster and conference information.
