Rockford & Northern Illinois Tennis Areas

The Rockford & Northern Illinois region — spanning Rockford, Loves Park, Belvidere, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, McHenry, Woodstock, and the far northwest suburbs — is an indoor-forward tennis region where year-round play is built around a small network of dedicated indoor clubs. The region is served by the USTA Northern Illinois (NITA) District within the USTA Midwest Section, which covers the northern third of Illinois and supports year-round league play, tournaments, and junior development across indoor tennis clubs throughout the district.

Indoor tennis in the Rockford metro is anchored by the Boylan Tennis Center (6 indoor courts with locker rooms, on the Boylan Catholic High School campus at 4000 St. Francis Drive). The longtime Forest City Tennis Center closed in December 2019 and was demolished in 2020, making Boylan the Rockford metro's sole indoor center — former Forest City GM Danny Beeman moved with it as Boylan's current director. In McHenry County, The Racket Club in Algonquin — operated by the Crystal Lake Park District — bills itself as McHenry County's original and largest indoor/outdoor tennis facility. Outdoor public tennis is headlined by the Guilford Tennis Center — a 14-court lighted outdoor facility run by the Rockford Park District. At the collegiate level, Northern Illinois University's women's tennis program in DeKalb won its first MAC West Division title and reached the MAC Championship match in 2024–25.

Rockford & Northern Illinois Junior Tennis Development

Junior tennis development in Rockford and Northern Illinois is driven by a blend of park district programs and year-round indoor club programs. The Rockford Park District operates seasonal youth tennis lessons, summer camps, and league play at the Guilford Tennis Center (14 outdoor courts). The Crystal Lake Park District runs its junior tennis programming through The Racket Club, covering pee-wee through advanced high-school-age competitive training.
