Texas has a tennis tradition that rivals any state in the country. The USTA Texas Section, founded in 1920 and one of the largest USTA sections in the United States, supports tens of thousands of adult and junior players through leagues, tournaments, and development programs from the Gulf Coast to the Panhandle. With a warm climate that allows outdoor tennis nearly year-round, the Lone Star State has produced a disproportionate number of world-class professionals and continues to develop elite junior talent through clubs, academies, and school programs statewide.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and Greater Houston area represent the densest concentration of tennis activity in Texas, each home to dozens of clubs, multiple USTA district leagues, and nationally competitive junior programs. The DFW area also hosts the ATP Dallas Open — an ATP 500 event held annually at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco and one of the premier professional tennis events in the United States. Cities like Austin have seen explosive tennis growth alongside their population boom, while established communities like Abilene and Midland maintain strong collegiate and club tennis cultures that punch well above their size.

Texas has produced some of the most recognizable names in professional tennis, from Wimbledon finalists and Olympic medalists to Grand Slam champions and world number ones.
Texas has one of the strongest high school tennis ecosystems in the country, governed by the UIL (University Interscholastic League). Class 6A programs in major metro areas — including schools in Plano, The Woodlands, and Dallas — compete at the highest levels of state competition annually.
At the collegiate level, Texas boasts several elite NCAA programs including University of Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, TCU Horned Frogs, SMU Mustangs, Baylor Bears, and Texas Tech Red Raiders — all of which recruit heavily from the Texas junior circuit and regularly compete at the national level.
The University of Texas Longhorns women's tennis team is one of the most decorated programs in NCAA history, having won four national championships — in 1993, 1995, 2021, and 2022. The back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022 cemented the program's place among the elite in college tennis. In 2025, the Longhorns made their 40th NCAA Tournament appearance, reflecting a sustained excellence rare at any level of collegiate athletics. The program has also claimed 24 regular-season conference titles and 22 conference tournament championships as of 2023, and has produced numerous NCAA Singles Champions, including Peyton Stearns in 2022 — the first Longhorn to win the individual national title.
Under the long tenure of head coach Howard Joffe, the program has developed into one of the premier women's tennis programs in the country, producing a remarkable line of ITA All-Americans and professional players. Notable Longhorns include Kelly Pace-Wilson, Peyton Stearns, Vivian Wolff, Allura Zamarripa, Maribella Zamarripa, Breaunna Addison, Beverly Bowes, Lulu Sun, Bianca Turati, Aeriel Ellis, Sandy Sureephong, Susan Gilchrist, Cristina Moros, Betty Sue Hagerman Welch, and many more who have gone on to professional careers and coaching roles across the sport.
Texas features several world-class tennis academies that develop junior players at every level — from entry-level competitors to those targeting collegiate scholarships and professional careers. The following are widely regarded as among the top junior tennis academies in the state:
Texas has produced and attracted some of the most accomplished tennis coaches in the world — from NCAA championship-winning collegiate coaches to USTA award winners, elite touring pro coaches, and legendary figures in junior development.
One of the most accomplished touring pro coaches in American tennis history, Craig Kardon brings over five decades of experience at the highest levels of the game. A Dallas native, Kardon played high school tennis at R.L. Turner High School before competing collegiately at the University of Texas Austin (1979–1983). He has since built a career coaching some of the most celebrated names in professional tennis.
